Homemade Spaghetti Sauce

Homemade Spaghetti Sauce

Homemade Spaghetti Sauce

Let me start by saying this is seriously one of the simplest homemade spaghetti sauces ever! And it’s way better than having a jarred sauce that has been sitting on a shelf!

I am all about using what you have in your pantry/fridge when cooking. My mom was one of those “food inventors” growing up; she would walk into our pantry, or look inside the fridge, and concoct a full course meal out of the few things she found.

I am now starting to understand why she would do that. Who wants to load up a car full of kids to run into the grocery store for one or two things? Not me!

Ingredient Substitutions

My homemade spaghetti sauce recipe gives you so much room to get creative with what you have at home! Below I’ll give you a few of the substitutes I use if I don’t have “____” ingredient in my pantry. While I do find that the ingredients on the left make for the best tasting sauce, the substitutes on the right will do just fine in a pinch!

Onion ~ onion powder

Garlic ~ garlic powder

Canned diced tomatoes ~ fresh tomatoes (just add more salt to taste)

Light brown sugar ~ white sugar

Parsley & Basil ~ Italian seasoning

On to the sauce!

1.) In a dutch oven (or large stockpot) add:

  • 2 tbsp olive oil
  • 1 small onion (or half a large onion)
  • 2 cloves of garlic (or 1 teaspoon of pre-minced garlic)

*Cook on medium heat until onions are soft.

~ Step 1 ~

2.) If you would like to add a meat to this sauce, you can cook it now. Cook meat until browned, and then continue to the next step!

*If adding meatballs from my Easy Turkey Meatball’s recipe, wait until after step 5

3.) Now add to the pot:

  • 1 can of diced (or petite diced) tomatoes
  • 1 can of tomato sauce
  • 1 can of tomato paste
  • 1 cup water

Stir!

4.) Next add:

  • 1/2 tsp light brown sugar
  • 1 tsp dried parsley
  • 1 tsp dried basil
  • 1 tsp kosher salt
  • 1/4 tsp pepper
  • 1/4 tsp red pepper flakes (optional)

Stir well!

5.) Once the sauce begins to boil, add 3 tbsp of red wine

*Do not let the sauce get to a full boil! You’re only looking for a few bubbles.

6.) If you have cooked my Easy Turkey Meatball’s, add them in now!

~ Step 6 ~

7.) Reduce the heat to low, and let simmer for about 30 minutes, stirring frequently.

8.) While sauce is simmering, begin cooking pasta according to package directions. I prefer to use either whole wheat or brown rice noodles (pictured below).

Once the 30 minutes are up, you’re all done! Pour the sauce over some noodles for some delicious spaghetti!

*Be sure to pour yourself a glass of that red wine too, you’ve earned it!
